When I started playing more with the idea of the trilogy and names that would work for the characters, I landed on Branna O’Dwyer, a hereditary witch who’s the glue of the series, her brother Connor and Finbar (we'll call him Fin) Burke. As I planned it, I saw that all had some connection to Ashford Castle.
Later I did some deeper research on Ashford Castle to find out it was built in the 1200's by... the Burkes, after they defeated the O'Connors. I saw that as a sign I was heading in the right direction!
Dark Witch is the story of Iona Sheehan – Branna and Connor’s cousin from the States. She grew up craving devotion and acceptance and found them in her maternal grandmother’s stories of a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends. Ireland. County Mayo, to be exact.
Iona arrives in Ireland with her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses. Not far from Ashford Castle, she finds her cousins, Branna and Connor O’Dwyer. And since family is family, they invite her into their home and their lives. When Iona lands a job at the local stables, she meets the owner, Boyle McGrath, a big, bold package.
Iona realizes that here she can make a home for herself and live her life as she wants in Ireland, even as she falls head over heels for Boyle. But nothing is as it seems. An ancient evil has wound its way around Iona’s family tree and must be defeated. Family and friends will fight with each other and for each other to keep the promise of hope—and love—alive.
