Brandon St. John jest lekkoduchem. Ani myśli się ustatkować, bo wiedzie pełne przygód życie bogatego kawalera z dobrego rodu. Pewnego dnia dostaje jednak niezwykle nieprzyjemne zadanie od swych braci. Ma uchronić jednego z młodszych braci przed oświadczeniem się nieodpowiedniej kobiecie. Lady Verena Westforth jest wprawdzie wdową ale młodą, ponętną i uroczą. Chodzą słuchy o jej nieodpowiednim prowadzeniu się. Z całą pewnością nie jest to właściwa kandydatka na żonę dla jednego z St. Johnów. Gdy Brandon udaje się do jej rezydencji z zamiarem złożenia propozycji nie do odrzucenia, okazuje się, że zadanie wcale nie będzie takie proste, jak mu się początkowo wydawało.

Jest to drugi tom z cyklu "Talizman". Pierwsza część nie została wydana w ogóle w Polsce, podobnie jak większość książek tej autorki. Na naszym rynku pojawiło się zaledwie sześć powieści tej pani więc nic dziwnego, że jak dotąd nie miałam okazji żadnej przeczytać. Pierwsza styczność z prozą Hawkins jest pozytywna.

Przede wszystkim, oprócz wątku romantycznego, który wiedzie prym, na głównym planie jest też zagadka kryminalna. Para głównych bohaterów stara się odnaleźć pewną tajemniczą listę, która znikła, a spowodowała śmierć jednego ze znajomych Vereny. Jej brat jest szantażowany z powodu tej listy. Również Brandon ma swoje powody, aby włączyć się w poszukiwania. Wątek kryminalny nie jest może bardzo fascynujący ale daje radę. Intryga jest dość zawiła i w miarę sensownie wytłumaczona, a czarny charakter zaskakujący.

Jeśli chodzi o wątek romantyczny, to nie mam większych uwag. Między Vereną, a Brandonem odpowiednio iskrzy, przekomarzają się i walczą na słowa. Jest między nimi fajna chemia, a ich relacja wygląda wiarygodnie, może poza tym, że zakochanie i wyznanie uczuć następuje trochę za szybko. Nie przeszkadza to jednak za bardzo. Jest między nimi burzliwie i ciekawie ale nie ma wrażenia przesytu. Emocje nimi targające wyglądają na prawdziwe i można im uwierzyć.

Oboje są postaciami dającymi się lubić. Zachowanie Vereny może chwilami odrobinę irytuje ale nie jest to coś, co by psuło odbiór całości. Brandon jest trochę zbyt bezczelny ale też nie jest to wielka wada. Bardzo szybko można się wczuć w ich historię i polubić oboje. Postacie poboczne też są dobrze wykreowane, a szczególnie kamerdyner Vereny, Herberts o lepkich rękach, którego bohaterka próbuje ucywilizować.

Podoba mi się styl Hawkins, lekkość w tworzeniu opowieści i jej płynność. Nie ma się wrażenia, że coś zgrzyta i szwankuje. Dodatkowym atutem jest humor, prosty ale dobry. Objawia się we wstawkach na początku każdego rozdziału, jak również dialogach między bohaterami i sytuacjach. Nie jest go za dużo ale daje się go odczuć.

Dobrze się czyta tę książkę. Bez przestojów, bo autorka nie przynudza nadmiarem opisów i wewnętrznych rozterek bohaterów. Nie przesadza też w druga stronę i nie przytłacza akcją. To prosta historia, dobrze napisana i okraszona solidnym warsztatem. Może nie jest to wybitna powieść ale warta przeczytania. Moja ocena końcowa to 8/10. Karen Hawkins to kolejna autorka, która trafia na moją prywatną listę do bliższego zapoznania się.
